It also aimed help to understand the potential for estimating the degree to which phenotypic correlations in sleep parameter are due to shared genetic or environmental factors as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the&nbsp;first study&nbsp;conducted in a South Asian country to determine population based estimates of sleep parameters with a fixed 12 hour photo-period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sleep duration and physical activity data were collected using actiwatches. Sleep diary and questionnaires helped to validate the collected data. The actiwatches were worn by participants for a period of 7 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The collected data was analyzed and generated the journal article titled \u201cAgreement between subjective and objective measures of sleep duration in a low-middle income country setting\u201d .<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-9e319115\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-0df19ed9\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Participants <\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>3750 Participants <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-4d1fa0f4\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-4d347667\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Aim<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To assess the association between reported sleep quality and depression in a population<br>based sample in Colombo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-44990253\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-e4c12007\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Methodology <\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Data from 3750 participants over the age of 18 years from the Colombo Twin and Singleton<br>Follow-up Study (2016) were used.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ethical approval obtained from ethics review committees in Sri Lanka, IJK, and Australia.<br>A nested-case-control study design was used for data analysis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Subjective sleep quality for past month was measured using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index<br>(score &gt;5 indicated poor sleep quality).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Beck Depression Inventory 11 measured depression (score equal to or &gt;14 indicated mild to<br>severe depressive symptoms).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-df882e90\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-7788ba6b\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Results<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>9% had mild to severe depression symptoms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(MSDs) (95% Cl 8% to 10%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>65% had self reported poor quality sleep<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(95% to 67%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Depression symptoms were strongly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>assodated with PSQ (p0001 ).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participants with PSQ were 3x more likely<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to have MSDs. OR 3.22, 95% Cl 284-4 45<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(adjusted for age, and education)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Females with PSQ had higher odds of<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>developing MSDs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(OR 3.92. 95% Cl 265-6.03, p&lt;.0001)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Older participants had higher odds of developing MSDs with PSQ:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>35-54 years (OR 5.01, 95% Cl 2.84-8.84, p&lt;.0001)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>55+ years (OR 6.0, 95% 235-15.09,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-3c75d704\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-acbbdd82\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Conclusion<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>People with poor sleep quality are more likely to have mild to severe depression symptoms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These results warrant the need to address sleep quality in people presenting with symptoms of depression.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Further research into causality, socio-cultural factors and omics research needs to be conducted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Sleep\u00a0sub-study was conducted within the\u00a0Colombo Twin and Singleton Follow-up Study\u00a0and determined the contribution of sleep and activity to the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and depression in Sri Lanka.
